How to Describe Used Item Condition and Reduce Returns

By The Garage Sail team··2 min read

Why condition descriptions matter

Most returns aren't fraud — they're expectations. The buyer expected the item to arrive in a condition your listing didn't promise but also didn't rule out.

Vocabulary that works

  • New with tags / sealed: unused, packaging intact.
  • New without tags: never worn; no original packaging.
  • Excellent: used once or twice; no visible wear.
  • Good: regular wear but no damage.
  • Fair: visible wear, minor cosmetic damage.
  • For parts: not fully functional. Say why.

Disclose specifics

List what a buyer would see. Scuff on right heel about 1cm. Zipper works but sticks at the top. Original insoles included; slight foot print visible.

Photograph what you describe

Every condition callout should have a matching photo.
